Fat Transfer
Fat transfer is also called Lipomodelling. It involves the transfer of fat from the abdomen or thighs into the breast. It is used in different situations mainly:
- To replace volume after breast reconstruction or to fill defects in the breast following breast-conserving surgery.
- An adjunct to other reconstruction techniques. such as Improvement of soft tissue coverage following implant-based breast reconstruction. and augmentation of volume and refinement after autologous breast reconstruction.
- Volume replacement of implants in unsatisfactory oncoplastic breast reconstruction outcomes.
- Improve the quality of irradiated skin and tissues.
- Congenital breast deformity and breast augmentation instead of using implants.
- Scar correction.
What does the procedure involve?
With the patient under general or local anaesthesia, fat cells are harvested from a donor site using needle aspiration with a syringe and cannula. Common donor sites used are the abdomen, outer thigh, and flank. The fat is usually purified via centrifugation to remove dead cells and debris. The fat is then injected into the breast, usually in small parcels and thin strips at different levels in the subcutis. A degree of fat resorption is common, mostly within the first 3 months following fat transfer. Patients usually have 1 to 4 sessions of lipomodelling depending on their condition.
One of the possible benefits of the procedure is that it can restore volume to the breast without the morbidity associated with other reconstruction techniques.
